I've been making the mistake of reading the comments. On Bluesky and Threads I've somehow ended up in an eddy where almost everyone seems left-leaning, with only the occasional asshole right-wing post or comment showing up, usually because someone I follow has gone to help ratio the schmuck. Facebook has changed so much from the old days, though, that only about half of what I see there is from people or pages I follow; the other half is quasi-random bullshit and ads, and some of the quasi-random bullshit consists of local-ish news which I'm exactly not interested in, except I read the comments, and learn that my neighbors here in New Jersey are a shocking collection of toadies, bootlickers, ass-kissers, and would-be concentration camp guards. Like, on display is the spirit of 1776 -- the Royalist side. There are so many people saying, for example, that Renee Good deserved to get shot in the face it now turns out four times because she was antagonizing "law enforcement" (ICE are not actually real law enforcement officers) or because she didn't listen to "law enforcement" orders or because she tried to run over ICE with her car (even though that's clearly not the case as anyone can see). None of them seem to care that ICE cannot legally order citizens to do anything. Of course, what's legal clearly doesn't matter. A woman is dead.

The elected officials in my state are doing a pretty good job facing this moment -- passing laws banning local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE, strengthening New Jersey's status as a sanctuary state, and so on. Plenty of mayors and the governor have come out with statements decrying ICE and pointing out they weren't told what ICE was going to do and no one is aiding them in an official capacity. Under every news item posted about this, there are about seventy-two bazillion dipshits cheering for ICE and saying stuff like, "Maybe next time don't break the law!" The sheer number of Americans who don't realize that being an "illegal immigrant" is a civil offense on the order of a parking ticket is depressing.

How are these Americans? These people would've said we need to follow the orders of the Redcoats, let the Confederacy slide, and not land in Europe on D-Day, because, after all, the king of England, Jefferson Davis, and Adolf Hitler were all "the authorities". These fucking people.
