Hippo: Mamdani said he'd order the arrest of Netanyahu for war crimes if he came to New York City. Hippo: Netanyahu came to make a speech at the U.N. but Mamdani admitted the city doesn't have the independent legal authority to arrest him. Hippo: But it seems to me if the U.S. can swoop in and abduct Maduro from Venezuela, the N.Y.P.D. should be able to pick up Netanyahu from LaGuardia. Hippo: The N.Y.P.D. is going to follow the law. Just this once.

Last year mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani promised he would, if elected, order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he set foot in New York City. "It is my desire to ensure that this be a city that stands up for international law," Mamdani said, observing that the International Criminal Court has issued a warant for Netanyahu for crimes against humanity. Of course the United States isn't a party to the Rome Statute; one imagines this is because if it were, a whole lot of U.S. elected and military officials would be getting room and board at the Hague.

Well, Netanyahu came to New York City to make some kind of fascist xenophobic hate-monger type speech at the U.N., but he was not arrested. (Trump, for his part, is now calling for the dissolution of the ICC entirely.) It turns out Mamdani huddled up with city lawyers and such and determined the NYPD cannot, in fact, arrest Netanyahu for war crimes. Mamdani did note that Bibi is not welcome in the city, so I guess he won't be going out for babaganoush or whatever, and someone's going to spit in his DoorDashed falafel from Mamoun's, but otherwise he's safely protected by the international norms he's been trying to obliterate since the 1990s. Funny how laws only work to protect the bad guys.
