Hippo: The Republican Party is wrecking so much more than what they're directly attacking. One of the most attractive things about the U.S. in terms of finance and law is its stability. Hippo: You could be confident that, no matter the specific swings of politics, a large number of things would not change. Bank deposits would be insured, mortgages would be subsidized, government obligations would be met, legal precedent would be honored. The Republicans have thrown ALL of that away. Hippo: Quite apart from their policy goals or theories about executive power, they've made it clear that the U.S. is NO LONGER STABLE. I don't think anyone even knows what the consequences of that are going to be.

The big problem is nobody, or probably nobody, really knows all the things in American life today, and possibly European life as well, that are undergirded by this faith in the United States, which is being actively destroyed. It's like a huge apartment building in the river and some small number of janitors for the building got together and realized they could sell wood to the owners to burn for fuel and started removing the pilings from the water.
