Remember back in school when we all learned that Congress has the power of the purse? That's probably the first time any of us heard the word "purse" used outside of a woman's accoutrement. And Congress has the power of it! This is what we were taught and while we remember very little of what we were taught in Social Studies, we remember that. Well, Congress had the power of the purse. The Trump regime has been doing whatever the fuck it wants regardless since he took office. Remember DOGE? DOGE has been losing and losing in the courts, although it's too late for many of the government agencies targeted.

And now Trump has finagled a way to get a payout from the government, by suing the IRS for releasing his tax returns (which should be public anyway) and then telling his personal attorney Todd Blanche, who is incidentally acting Attorney General -- which is handy because acting officials don't need to be confirmed by the Senate, not that they haven't been rubber-stamping every asshole bootlicker that comes up -- to settle the suit for $1.8 billion plus and also by the way add a teeny little addendum barring the government from auditing Trump, his family, or their companies, which is exactly the kind of thing you demand when you're innocent.

On top of all that, Trump's aforementioned personal attorney is appointing the committee to say how the funds get spent, not Congress.

This is some kind of new level of Crazytown. Every time you think you've delved as low as you can go, it turns out there's an even lower floor. What bugs me about this more than anything is, something like this requires the cooperation of hundreds of people. Not military people, where they're expected to follow orders and not everyone is clear on what's an illegal order. Regular bureaucrats, just doing their jobs, going, okay, sure, let's get to work on the latest blatantly unconstitutional, clearly corrosive grift package. Can someone please find the people willing to stand up and say no?
