Hippo: Remember when Obama promised to close the Guantanamo prison? He even signed an Executive Order on one of his first days in office. "Closed as soon as practicable, and no later than 1 year from the date of this order". That was 2009. Hippo: Only [democracy sad face] cowardly congrassholes failed to stand up for the principles of our Constitution and prevented this blight on democracy and justice from being closed. And Trump just signed a new Executive Order revoking Obama's order to close it. Hippo: For once we can legitimately sneer "Thanks, Obama" for failing somehow to lead his own party. And here's hoping one day every Congrasshole who voted to keep Guantanamo open ends up imprisoned there...indefinitely.

Bill Weinberg brought my attention to Trump's revocation of Obama's 2009 order to close the detention facility at Guantánamo. Feel free to refresh yourself on the evil history of Guantánamo which stretches back fifteen years as of this writing. That's fifteen years of the United States failing to live up to its ideals, falling short by an unbelievable margin.

There's a quick primer on why President Obama failed to close it. Chalk it up to lack of political will. Whatever it was, I think we can lay the blame at the feet of both parties.

And thanks to their essential cowardice, Trump has even more avenues by which to shame these United States. Not to mention destroy lives.

Generally I'm not one to wish actual pain and torture upon people, but in this case I'm willing to make an exception: Every elected official responsible for this travesty should get to experience it up close and personal, preferably for the rest of their lives.
